Annual Meeting of the CPPCC, Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Beijing
These two meetings – starting on March 3 and March 5 – are the two most important annual political gatherings this year. During these ‘Two Sessions’, China’s 5000 strong political and business elite meets for about two weeks. The National People’s Congress (NPC) is the legislature or parliament like the House of Commons in the UK, or the US House of Representatives. The Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). That’s the most powerful political advisory body like the House of Lords or the US Senate albeit that the CPPCC does not have any legislative power.
They discuss the policy priorities for the new year of 2020. The new economic growth figure will be revealed: we expect it to move downwards a little, towards less than 6% per year. 2020 marks the deadline of China’s target to eliminate absolute poverty. The steps for achieving China’s next two targets will be outlined as well during the meetings: (1) 2035: China is a leading innovation nation; (2): 2050 China is a global leader in national power and international influence.
