JUNE 23, 2022 14th BRICS Summit Held

On 23rd June, 2022, the 14th BRICS Summit was held virtually and chaired by Xi JinPing, China’s President. The government leaders of the other member countries whre all present:  India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, President Vladimir Putin of Russia, and President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.In addition to these 5 countries, 13 other countries participated as guests: Algeria, Argentina, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Fiji, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Senegal, Thailand and Uzbekistan.

During a BRICS summit, the leaders discuss any issue they want. What they talked about this time?

President Putin stressed the importance for expanding the relations with other associations like   ASEAN, the African Union, the Association of Caribbean States, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Indian Ocean Rim Association.

In the concluding manifesto they all supported resolution of Russia-Ukraine Conflict through peaceful diplomatic mechanisms and showed their willingness to support the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)’s efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

A brief history of the BRICS

  • In September 2006 the 1st BRIC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York City.
  • In 2009 the 1st BRIC summit took place in the Russian Federation on the global financial crisis.
  • In 2010 South Africa joined and BRICS became the new name.
